A Kolkata court in India sentenced 33-year-old Sanjay Roy to life in prison on charges of sexual assault and murder on Tuesday local time.
The victim's bereaved family complained about the ruling, saying Roy should be sentenced to death.
Roy, on the other hand, has pleaded not guilty during the trial, saying he was framed.
Earlier in August last year, a female trainee was killed after being sexually assaulted at a national hospital in Kolkata, the capital of East India's West Bengal.
After the incident became known, nationwide strikes and protests continued, with doctors' groups calling for a swift investigation, punishment of those responsible, and safety measures in hospitals.
