The KOSPI started 0.52% higher at 2,533.23 and rose to the late 2,540 level in early trading, but turned lower in the day on growing foreign selling.
The KOSDAQ index also opened 0.13% higher at 728.57, but turned lower as foreign selling grew during the day.
On the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won-dollar exchange rate started at 1,437 won, down as much as 14.7 won, and fell to 1,432.9 won during the day.
Markets believe that U.S. President Trump's failure to mention specific tariff plans in his inaugural speech has affected the fall in the exchange rate.
