The Daegu District Court sentenced 50-year-old A, the head of the civic group "National People's Protection Solidarity," to a year and two months in prison for inspecting and arresting foreigners at will, saying they were suspected of staying illegally.

The court explained that if a private arrest is tolerated only by the suspicion of being an illegal alien, there will be a serious disturbance in the judicial order, which cannot be justified just because the foreigners caught are illegal.

Mr. A was charged with inspecting and arresting foreigners riding motorcycles without license plates or commuting to and from work in a densely populated area of foreigners in Daegu for looking like illegal residents.

A total of 14 foreigners were affected, including legal residents.
