Predicting AI torrential rain, expanding disaster messages...strengthening disaster prevention

Measures to prevent weather disasters, such as predicting torrential rain and expanding disaster texts, will be expanded and improved with artificial intelligence.

As a major policy this year (2025), the Korea Meteorological Administration said it will focus on securing public safety from dangerous weather by strengthening surveillance and forecasts to respond to the climate crisis.

In addition to the existing numerical prediction model methods, AI and artificial intelligence ultra-short precipitation prediction models will be used to predict torrential rain six hours in advance from May.

Extreme heavy rain emergency disaster messages, which were only applied to the metropolitan area, Jeollanam-do, and Gyeongbuk, will be sent nationwide.

Disaster messages are sent not only in heavy rain but also in heavy snow conditions, and snow weight information provided in Honam, Gangwon, and Chungcheong will be expanded nationwide.

The time from earthquake observation to alarm is expected to be reduced from 5-10 seconds to 3-5 seconds, greatly reducing safety blind spots.
