European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she would protect European interests and pursue pragmatic relations with the second U.S. administration of Donald Trump.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Monday local time, Commission President von der Leyen said it was on the EU's top priority to discuss and prepare for early negotiations of common interests with the United States.

He also stressed that he will always adhere to the principles of protecting the interests of the EU and protecting values, saying that it will be practical in relations with the United States.

On Trump's signing of an executive order to withdraw from the Paris Climate Change Agreement on his first day in office, he also said the Paris Agreement was still the greatest hope of all mankind.

The EU then added that it would continue to work with countries that want to protect nature and prevent global warming.

EU climate commissioner Wopk Hookstra said on his social media that it was regrettable that one of the world's largest economies and closest allies in the fight against climate change was withdrawing from the Paris Convention.
