According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government on the 21st, three metropolitan governments and Korail agreed to raise subway fares from 1,400 won to 1,550 won at a meeting on the 2nd.
Earlier, from August 12, 2023, the Seoul Metropolitan Government raised bus fares in Seoul by 300 won (1,200 won → 1,500 won) (based on cards), and raised basic subway fares by 150 won (1,250 won → 1,400 won) from October 7 of the same year.
At that time, the city postponed the 150 won increase to 2024, saying it would raise subway fares twice, but the government's price stabilization stance did not actually make the increase.
"A meeting with related agencies agreed that the subway deficit should be raised as soon as possible in consideration of the current political and social situation," a Seoul Metropolitan Government official said. "There were concerns that if we fail to raise it again this time, it will be delayed."
However, the official explained, "Gyeonggi Province has to take related procedures such as the price committee, public hearings, and parliamentary reporting, so we cannot know the specific timing of the hike," adding, "We are currently expecting the first half of this year."
