U.S. President Donald Trump said he is discussing imposing a 10% tariff starting on the 1st of next month based on the fact that China is sending the narcotic painkiller fentanyl to Mexico and Canada.

President Trump made the remarks at a press conference on the 21st local time to announce investments in artificial intelligence and AI infrastructure worth $500 billion.

Asked in a recent call with President Xi Jinping if he had talked about tariffs, he said he did not talk much.

Earlier, Trump said at the White House Oval Office shortly after his inauguration that he was considering imposing 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada on February 1.

In Trump's first White House press conference since taking office, OpenAI, Japan's SoftBank and U.S. software company Oracle said they would set up joint venture Stargate to invest up to $500 billion over the next four years.
