Korean Music Overseas Fees Increase by About 40%..."We will strengthen the establishment of a copyright management system"

Last year, the distribution amount to music copyright holders was 423.5 billion won, up nearly 9% from the previous year.

According to the Korea Music Copyright Association (hereinafter referred to as the Haneumjohyeop) today (22nd), it collected 436.5 billion won in music copyright fees last year. The figure is up 7.38% year-on-year.

The collection of music copyright fees has expanded in various fields such as transmission, broadcasting, performances, and overseas usage fees.

In particular, it is noteworthy that the amount collected in the broadcasting usage fee sector, which had been stagnant for a long time, increased by 49.5% compared to the previous year. Analysts say that the establishment of a broadcasting music monitoring business to solve contract problems with broadcasters that have been going on for years contributed to the increase in user fees.

It can also be seen that the popularity of Korean music in the global market is steadily growing. Last year, overseas usage fees totaled 37.7 billion won, up about 38.1% from the previous year.

However, copying fees incurred when producing albums such as CDs decreased by 22.1%. Environmental problems of existing plastic CD albums and acceleration of the transition to digital platform albums are cited as factors for the decline.
