The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced the results and countermeasures of the national airport safety facility inspection conducted in the wake of the Muan Airport disaster.

As a result of the inspection, there were seven airports in need of improvement of defense facilities, including Muan, Gimhae, and Jeju airports, and seven airports in need of expansion of safety zones, including Ulsan and Wonju airports, and both of them were applicable.

The azimuth facility will be improved by undergrounding the foundation and replacing the support with a lightweight steel structure depending on the situation of each airport facility, but it will be completed in the first half of the year.

The runway safety zone will also be expanded at the same time, but the airport, where it is difficult to secure a safe site, will introduce a runway departure prevention facility and EMAS (EMAS).

EMAS is a facility where cement blocks are destroyed by the weight of the aircraft and braking force is applied to the aircraft, and an expert TF for the introduction of the facility has been decided to be formed within this month.

In addition, the same standard will be applied to airports to be built in the future, such as Gadeokdo New Airport and Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport.
