According to the data received by Choi Soo-jin, a member of the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, 1,681 out of 7,607 reporting agencies for radiation use failed to report properly, and 486 agencies had no management authority due to business closures and bankruptcies, indicating poor radiation safety management.
Under the Nuclear Safety Act, radiation workers are required to receive safety education, and 36 institutions, including Samsung SDI's Ulsan plant and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, have not received legal compulsory education in the past five years, and the total amount of fines reached 51.6 million won.
In addition, 27.4% of 7,121 radiation use reporting institutions, excluding closed or bankrupt institutions, did not appoint safety managers, and 67.4% did not manage through radiation dose meter.
Rep. Choi Soo-jin pointed out, "In order to prevent the recurrence of the recent Samsung Electronics radiation exposure accident, the government needs to thoroughly supervise the institutions using radiation and strengthen safety education."
