Haitian police said on the 3rd local time that a heavily armed gang attacked a police base in Ponsonde, a coastal area of western Artivonit, and then fired at residents of a nearby village.
At least 70 people have been killed, AFP reported, citing the United Nations.
Local media said there were no official tallies, but more than 40 homes burned and hundreds of residents left their residences making SOS requests to police.
The attack was attributed to the Grand Griff gang, which operates in the area, which is said to be one of Haiti's most brutal gangs.
