Elephant relief activities were carried out near Chiang Mai, a famous tourist destination in northern Thailand that has been hit hard by recent floods.

Local Thai aid workers arrived with two elephants in a village in the Sarafi region, about 20 kilometers from Chiang Mai city, to help stranded residents.

The elephants made their way across the water, which was waist-high, to the residents.

The floods were caused by heavy rain during the rainy season in Thailand, a tropical monsoon climate, flooding the Ping River across Chiang Mai.

This has caused major tourist destinations, including famous night markets, to flood Chiang Mai and some areas to lose electricity.

Central Thailand is preparing to prevent flood damage by starting the discharge of major dams.
