Global online video service (OTT) platforms operate policies that only discriminate against domestic consumers or have great difficulty in receiving residual fees when canceled in the middle.

Today (8th), the Korea Consumer Agency and Min Byung-duk of the Democratic Party of Korea released the results of a survey on the service status of six OTT operators, including YouTube, Netflix, Teving, Coupang Play, Wave, and Disney Plus, from late February to June.

According to the results of the survey, OTT companies allow online cancellation, but did not properly notify consumers that they could immediately cancel and refund the remaining usage fee.

These operators maintain the service until the next payment date when consumers apply for cancellation online and terminate the contract without a refund. Consumers have to go through separate procedures such as phone calls or chat counseling to get a refund on the remaining usage fees.

In particular, it has been confirmed that Netflix does not cancel and refund the payment seven days after the payment date under the terms and conditions.

YouTube is facing controversy over discrimination in Korea. YouTube did not release a "family plan" in Korea, which is available in more than 40 countries, including the United States, Germany, Japan, and India. The family plan is a service that allows users to use YouTube Premium at a low price by sharing accounts with up to five families living at the same address. Unlike some 80 other countries, there is no student membership that offers up to 60 percent discount to users of student status in Korea.

Korea is a single plan with "YouTube Music" coupled to the YouTube premium plan. On the other hand, in Denmark, the Netherlands, and Finland, there is a low-cost plan that only has the function of watching videos without advertisements except for YouTube music.

Representative Min Byung-duk criticized, "Only Korea and Slovenia have to subscribe to the service separately even if they are the same family without YouTube family plans and student plans."
