An Afghan man in his 20s has been arrested for plotting a gun attack on U.S. presidential election day next month, the U.S. Department of Justice says.

The U.S. Department of Justice used a special immigration visa program in 2021 to capture and indict Nasir Ahmad Tawedi, 27, who lives in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on these charges.

Tawedi searched online for information about how to access cameras (CCTVs) in Washington, DC, the U.S. capital, and states that do not require guns to be carried.

Tawedi, along with his brother-in-law, a minor, was caught after meeting with an FBI agent who hid his identity to buy two AK47 rifles, 10 magazines and 500 rounds of ammunition.

After his arrest, he said he planned a large rally to target the attack and thought he and his brother-in-law would die as martyrs.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement: "We have obtained semi-automatic weapons to deter a plot to launch a violent attack on US soil on Election Day in the name of ISIS (the extremist militant group Islamic State).
