Semiconductor stocks such as SK Hynix and Hanmi Semiconductor were strong, but Samsung Electronics fell more than 2%.
Samsung Electronics closed at 58,900 won, disgracing "50,000 electronics" based on its closing price for the first time in a year and seven months.
The tech-heavy KOSDAQ index closed 0.35 percent lower at 775.48 on net selling by foreigners and institutions.
The won-dollar exchange rate rose 0.5 won to 1,350.2 won as of 3:30 p.m. in Seoul's foreign exchange market.
