Booker Prize... "Nobel Prize is amazing news".

The organizers of the Booker Prize for British Literature, which played an important role in Korea's first Nobel laureate in literature, welcomed the award, calling it "huge news."

Shortly after the announcement of the Han River award, the Booker Prize posted the news and photos of the Han River award on the first screen of its website and posted a link to an interview with the Booker Prize last year.

On social media, he also shared a tweet from the Nobel Prize committee, adding, "What wonderful news!"

Britain's prestigious literary award The Booker Prize has a deep connection to the Han River.

Han became the first Korean to receive the Man Booker International Award, the international category of the Booker Prize, for "Vegetarian" in 2016.

Then, the 2018 novel "White" was shortlisted.

In an interview with the Booker Prize in July last year, Han Kang said, "At the time, I thought it was a little strange in a 'good sense'," adding, "I am grateful for helping my work reach a wide audience of readers in other cultures."

There is more connection between the Han River and the Booker Prize.

Novelist Max Porter, who headed the judging panel for next year's International Booker Prize, contributed to the publication of an English translation of a vegetarian when he was working as a publisher editor.

In July last year, when the Booker Prize selected vegetarians as the recommended book of the month, he revealed the backstory of the translation publication of The Vegetarian in detail to the Booker Prize.

According to Potter's contribution to the Booker Prize at the time, a woman named Deborah Smith approached her when she attended an event at the London Book Fair in 2013, showing her seven Korean-English translations of a vegetarian.

"It was scary, shocking, elegant, radical and beautiful," he said, explaining that Portobello Books, where he was involved, signed a British copyright contract and asked Deborah Smith to translate it.

Potter said there were not many objections at the time, but there were some, adding, "Everyone agreed that the translation sample was a special and important book, but some felt too unfamiliar to predict that it would do well commercially."

During the translation process, he sat down with Smith with a pencil, reviewed and revised the translation, and sent it to Han Kang, who reportedly accepted or rejected it.

"I wanted to avoid the cultural stereotypes of translated novels," Potter explained, "I didn't want the fact that it was a Korean novel to be more important than the fact that it was a surprisingly good novel, I wanted it to be fresh and challenging."

The translated version of the vegetarian English language has attracted public attention since Han Kang and Smith shared the Booker Prize in 2016, and there has also been a controversy over mistranslation since then.
