Two people were injured when an Israeli military tank opened fire on the headquarters of the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon.

The U.N. peacekeeping force said Israeli tanks fired at its headquarters in the southern Lebanese town of Nakura on Thursday, striking an observation tower and injuring two peacekeepers and leaving them hospitalized.

It also said the headquarters and neighboring areas were repeatedly attacked, and Israeli forces fired into nearby bunkers where peacekeepers were sheltering, damaging vehicles and communications systems.

In a related move, Italy's Defense Ministry summoned Israel's ambassador to Italy to protest, saying, "Israel's firing on UN peacekeeping bases is absolutely unacceptable and a clear violation of international law."

Italy has now sent about 1,000 troops to the United Nations peacekeeping force, which serves as a buffer between Israel and Lebanon.
