As many as 140 people have been killed or injured in an Israeli airstrike in the center of Beirut, Lebanon's capital.

Even U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon were attacked by Israel and wounded, prompting criticism from countries.

Ambulances filled the deep night alley.

Israel, which continues its airstrikes in Lebanon, this time bombed two houses in the city center of Beirut.

Powerful explosions have caused more than a hundred casualties, including the complete destruction of an eight-story apartment building.

The airstrikes were reported to have targeted high-ranking Hezbollah officials and Fik Sabha.

But Sapa was not in the building where the airstrikes were carried out, Hezbollah-run Almanar TV reported.

Smoke also rose from the headquarters of the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon due to Israeli shelling.

Two Indonesian soldiers were injured in the attack and taken to a hospital.

Italy, a major dispatch country, called in the Israeli ambassador to protest strongly, and criticism from the United States, Indonesia, and Spain followed.

[Farhan Haq / UN Secretary-General's Deputy Spokesperson: Intentional attack on peacekeepers is a grave violation of International Humanitarian Law and Security Council Resolution 1701.]

Israel said Hezbollah was operating near the base and called on UN forces to move their presence, but dismissed them as sticking to their current position.

In Lebanon, 50 countries, including Korea, have dispatched more than 10,000 troops.

The gunfire continued in Palestine as well.

Dozens of people, including children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school in central Gaza where evacuees were being evacuated.
