Local residents have protested the government's policy to supply Hwacheon Dam water to semiconductor industrial complexes in Gangwon-do.

The Hwacheon-gun Council of Social Organizations held a resolution against the supply of Hwacheon Dam water semiconductor industrial complexes with 3,000 residents at Hwacheon-eup Sports Park.

They argued that the construction of the Hwacheon Dam caused more than 3 trillion won in damage, including agricultural land, road submergence, and displaced people, and that they should make reasonable compensation or create a semiconductor industrial complex in the Hwacheon area to bring water to the Hwacheon Dam.

Since the management of semiconductor industrial complexes, water resources, and dams is divided among government ministries, the Prime Minister's Office called for a solution to collect residents' opinions on the use of Hwacheon Dam water and come up with measures.

Earlier, the government announced a plan to transform the Hwacheon Dam, which was previously centered on electricity generation, into a multi-purpose dam and supply 600,000 tons of dam water per day to the Yongin National Semiconductor Industrial Complex from 2035.
