Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has said a U.N. Security Council resolution is needed for a ceasefire between Israel and pro-Iranian militant Hezbollah, which is fighting in the country.

According to foreign media, Prime Minister Mikati said in a video address on the 11th local time, "Lebanon's foreign ministry will ask the UN Security Council for a resolution calling for a full and immediate ceasefire."

Prime Minister Mikati also stressed to the Security Council that "Resolution 1701 should be fully applied."

Security Council Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006 to end the ground war between Israel and Hezbollah, stipulated that Israeli forces would be fully withdrawn from Lebanon and that only Lebanese troops and U.N. peacekeepers could be stationed south of Lebanon's Ritani River, except Hezbollah.

However, the resolution was ineffective because Hezbollah and other armed groups did not withdraw from the region.

Prime Minister Mikati said Lebanese government forces were committed to deploying troops in the south and strengthening their presence along the border, adding: "Hezbollah agrees on this issue."

Israeli forces then fired artillery at a UN peacekeeping base, accusing it of a "crime" for injuring some of the soldiers.
