A report from the Ukrainian side that Russia has been using secret tankers to export 70% of its oil produced in offshore mines, the British daily Guardian reported.

According to a report released by Ukraine's Kyiv University of Economics on the 14th local time, the amount of oil exported by Russia using uninsured secret tankers to avoid sanctions has roughly doubled in a year to 4.1 million barrels per day through June.

This shows that economic sanctions imposed by the West to halt Russia's invasion of Ukraine have faced various challenges, the newspaper noted. The

report estimated that Russia has invested at least $10 billion in the secret tanker since the beginning of 2022 and around 13.6 trillion won in our money, calling it "a strategy that has significantly reduced the influence of Western sanctions."

According to Lloyd's List Intelligence, a maritime intelligence service, 630 oil tankers, including ships more than 20 years old, are transporting Russian and Iranian oil subject to Western sanctions.

Western countries are attempting to crack down on Russia's "shadow fleet," and last month the UK imposed sanctions on 10 ships.

Ukraine's Kyiv University of Economics said, "Russia's old, uninsured, secret oil tankers could cause environmental disasters in European waters. There has not been an oil spill yet, but there could be a major disaster that would cost billions of dollars to clean up, he said, calling for tougher sanctions.
