According to the Nobel Committee's website on the 15th, three Korean winners are marked. The first winner to win the Nobel Prize before former President
Kim was Charles J. Pederson, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1987.
Pederson was born in Busan in October 1904 during the Korean Empire, according to the website. Pederson was born under the supervision of his father, a Norwegian ship engineer, and a Japanese woman who worked in Korea.
Pederson lived in Korea until he was eight years old, moved to Japan, and went to an American university. After earning a master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry after discovering an organic compound called "Crown Ether" while working at the Jackson Institute in DuPont, USA.
Pederson's nationality was the United States at the time of the award, but the Nobel Committee classified him as Korean-born based on his birthplace, not his nationality.
According to Alfred Nobel's maintenance not to consider the nationality of the candidate, the Nobel Committee only specifies the place of birth, institutions, and reasons for the award on its website, not the nationality of the winner.
