According to local police on the 15th, a 63-year-old Park was shot by a four-member armed robber in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Cape Town Fineland, Western Cape, South Africa, at around 3:15 p.m. the previous day.
Park, who suffered two gunshot wounds to his chest and stomach, was taken to a nearby Vincent Hospital by paramedics who were dispatched after receiving a report and underwent surgery, and fortunately, his life was not affected, according to the Korean Embassy in South Africa.
Park, who has lived in South Africa for more than 20 years while running a private business, reportedly suffered damage after resisting the robber's demand for money and goods.
Local police are chasing the whereabouts of four suspects who fled the scene on charges of attempted murder.
South Africa has one of the highest rates of violent crime in the world, with about 20,000 people killed each year out of a population of 60 million.
The Korean Embassy in South Africa said, "Especially in the fourth quarter, violent crimes to pay for vacations tend to increase ahead of the year-end and New Year holidays," adding, "Please be extra careful when outside activities or driving."
