Russia has begun ratifying the North Korea-Russia Strategic Partnership Treaty signed in June amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula due to North Korea's bombing of the inter-Korean road following the drone incident.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the ratification had been submitted to Russia's lower house of parliament, stressing that "the North-Russia treaty is important as it strategically deepens cooperation in all areas, including security."

He also pointed out that the wording of the treaty is so clear that it does not need to be explained further.

The Strategic Partnership Treaty signed by Putin and State Councilor Kim Jong-un in June includes that if one side is in a state of war, the other will provide military aid.

The Russian House of Representatives Committee on International Affairs, which will deal with the ratification, will begin deliberations as early as next month.

The North Russia Treaty takes effect when it is signed by the President after ratification by the Russian House of Representatives and the Senate and the parties to the treaty exchange the ratification.
