The overall turnout in the by-elections was low, but only the election of the head of the local government excluding the Seoul Superintendent of Education showed as much heat as the local elections in 2022.

This is attributed to the fact that the leaders of each ruling and opposition party actively jumped into the election field and engaged in an all-out war.

Reporter Kim Kyung-soo reports.

The turnout for the by-elections, which includes all four heads of local governments and the election of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, was only 24.62 percent.

However, in terms of the head of the local government alone, the turnout was 53.9%, exceeding the 50% range.

In addition to the by-election for the head of Gangseo-gu District Office in October last year, the national average turnout for local elections in 2022 is also higher.

By region, Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do was 70.1% and Gokseong-gun was 64.6% and the election was hot,
Ganghwa-gun, Incheon, and Geumjeong-gu, Busan, which are strong areas of
conservatism, were also tallied at 58.3% and 47.2%, respectively.

In particular, Yeonggwang-gun showed a turnout as high as the last general election, which is believed to have been affected by the tense three-way battle between the Democratic Party, the Cho Kuk Innovation Party and the Progressive Party during the election.

In addition, the leaders of the ruling and opposition parties directly jumped into the election campaign and raised the game.

Chairman Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party, who defined the election as a "second regime judgment", focused on the glory campaign, one of the pillars of the opposition "Honam Daejeon", until the last minute,

[Lee Jae-myung / Democratic Party leader (11th): We've been here for three consecutive days for the Yeonggwang County election]
Cho Kuk, chairman of the Innovation Party, and Kim Jae-yeon, chairman of the Progressive Party, who challenged the Democratic Party's stronghold by advocating the
alternative opposition party, also targeted votes with monthly rent and volunteer activities in Honam, respectively.

[Representative of Cho Kuk / Cho Kuk Innovation Party (15th): Now, the same voting behavior as in the past, must change. A vote that is taken just by looking at the number, no question or question, should end now.]

[Kim Jae-yeon/Leader of the Progressive Party (15th): Please clean up old politics with the power of our Glory County people who believed in the power of sweat over money.]

In particular, Han Dong-hoon, CEO of the People's Power, made special efforts to revive the strong area by visiting Geumjeong-gu, Busan, six times, which was considered the biggest winning place in the by-elections.

[Han Dong-hoon / Representative of the People's Power (15th): Am I the 6th? I gave up counting after about three times. It's because I can't count my heart for gold.]

Although it was difficult for the representatives of each party to be free from the "election responsibility theory" as they poured out their party power, many say that representatives Han Dong-hoon and Lee Jae-myung avoided fatal injuries by winning a 2-2 draw.
