Lee Jong-seok, the head of the Constitutional Court, will retire after a six-year term, stressing that he should be wary of the politicization of justice and achieve trial independence.

In his retirement speech today, Lee said that the number of cases of power dispute trials and impeachment trials has increased significantly in recent years.

At the same time, he said that the politicization of justice will eventually lead to distrust in the Constitutional Court's decision, undermining the democratic order based on the rule of law and separation of powers, and that he should strengthen his will.

After being appointed as a Constitutional Court justice in October 2018, Director Lee took the position of the Constitutional Court in December last year.

Along with Lee, judges Lee Young-jin and Kim Ki-young will retire today (17th), but no replacement has been decided due to the confrontation between the ruling and opposition parties over the distribution of recommendation rights.
