The Uijeongbu District Court's Goyang Branch sentenced Lee Young-bok, who was handed over to trial on charges of robbery and murder, to life imprisonment.
The court said it took two innocent lives and that the nature of the crime was extremely poor, but it ruled in consideration of the fact that it was a de facto abolitionist country.
On Dec. 30 last year and Jan. 5 this year, Lee Young-bok killed two female business owners in their 60s who were operating alone at two coffee shops in Goyang and Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, and took money and ran away.
After the first crime, he fled around Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, and after the second crime, he fled to Gangwon-do and was arrested in Gangneung.
Lee Young-bok, who has a number of previous convictions, including theft, was found to have committed another crime less than two months after he was released from prison in November last year.
