Rep. Jin Sun-mi of the Democratic Party of Korea, a member of the National Assembly's Education Committee, received the "status of payment of legal charges for elementary, middle and high school private schools" from 17 metropolitan and provincial offices of education nationwide,
Of the 419 billion won paid last year, private schools actually paid 73.6 billion won, with a payment rate of only 17.6%.
Of the 1,715 schools, 1,166 out of the 1,715 schools had a legal levy payment rate of less than 10%, accounting for 68%, while 106 schools and 6.2% did not pay legal levy at all.
On the other hand, 125 schools paid 100% of the legal fees, which was only 7.3%.
In principle, the legal levy is paid in full by the private school corporation as a corporate transfer for the pension and health insurance levy of faculty members, but the out-of-pocket amount is covered by the education office's subsidy for financial defects in labor costs.
