A Catholic priest who has been fighting for the human rights of indigenous people in Mexico has been shot dead.

Mexican prosecutors say a Catholic priest, Marcelo Perez, was shot dead in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, on Tuesday local time.

After Father Perez finished the Mass, he got into the car, and two people approached him on a motorcycle and opened fire, prosecutors said.

Father Perez is an indigenous Chochil and has worked for the human rights of indigenous peoples and farmers in southern Mexico for the past two decades.

He was also well-known as a negotiator in areas where crime, violence, and land disputes were prevalent.

Father Perez is known to have led several marches, especially against violence, and also received death threats from those who opposed it.
