The Korea National Park Service released today (24th) the results of a survey of greenhouse gas absorption in seven national parks, including Seoraksan, Odaesan, Taebaeksan, Sobaeksan, Chiaksan, Bukhansan, and Taeanhaean.
The forest area of the seven national parks was 134,598ha, more than twice the size of Seoul, and the annual greenhouse gas absorption was 1,298,797 tons in terms of carbon dioxide.
If calculated per hectare of forest, it has absorbed 14.33 tons of greenhouse gases per year.
The amount of greenhouse gases emitted by one citizen per year is 13.1 tons as of 2021, and considering this, seven national parks absorb 147,000 greenhouse gases.
The Korea National Park Service explained that considering the estimated social cost of one ton of carbon dioxide in the U.S. is $51, seven national parks have reduced the social cost by 127.8 billion won due to the absorption of greenhouse gases.
The corporation added that as a result of the study, it obtained a certificate of international standard verification from the Royal Standard Association of the United Kingdom, an international accredited organization for greenhouse gas verification.
