A lawyer representing a medical litigator protesting the allocation of medical school reinforcements was convicted in the first trial of attempting to blackmail another client.

The Seoul Central District Court sentenced lawyer A, who was charged with attempted blackmail, to eight months in prison and two years of probation.

Lawyer A is accused of attempting to receive 130 million won worth of success fees and apology rewards by threatening 15 times when a client who signed a case delegation contract appointed another lawyer dissatisfied with his performance in 2019.

Lawyer A, who represented an administrative lawsuit against the government's increase in medical schools this year, argued that he won a civil lawsuit against his client, and that he was guilty in a criminal trial, calling it a "political retaliatory ruling."
