The proposal contains four visions: reorganizing the urban spatial structure through the 6.6km section of the railway between Yeokgok and Songnae, improving the three-dimensional use of the station area and improving the competitiveness of the old city center, expanding green spaces and public facilities using abandoned road sites, and enhancing the feasibility of undergrounding by revitalizing residents' participation.
In addition, the master plan was presented with a development plan including the railway site and the surrounding area, and the total project cost was estimated at about 2 trillion won.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to select the target of the railway underground project among the local governments that applied around the end of December.
If selected as the leading project, it will be included in the "Basic Plan for Underground Railroad Development" next year, and the design work of the "Underground Railroad Line and Integrated Development of Railway Sites" will be carried out in 2027.
Gyeongin Railway, the first railway in Korea, has served as a key transportation infrastructure in the Seoul metropolitan area since its opening in 1899, but it has created problems such as the separation of urban living areas, reduced land use efficiency, and noise and vibration.
