I'm sure many of you have thought about what it would be like to be able to understand the sounds of animals at least once.

This could soon become a reality.

A European research team has developed a technology to interpret pig calls with artificial intelligence.

I'm reporter Kim Do-won.

It's a pig farm in Denmark.

the pigs that are constantly whining.

They all sound the same, but the crying sound varies depending on the situation.

A research team from six European countries, including Denmark and Germany, collected thousands of different pig calls.

[Elody Mandel-Briefer / Biologist at the University of Copenhagen: Developed an artificial intelligence program and taught it to tell us if the pig we recorded means feeling good or bad]

Artificial intelligence learns and classifies vast files recorded by pigs of different genders and ages in all kinds of situations.

The short 'honey' is when you feel good, the sharp sound of 'screeching' is when you are stressed, etc.

Classification by hand is difficult, but real-time analysis is also possible thanks to artificial intelligence.

[Yepherasmussen / University of Copenhagen Researcher: Fantastic. Compared to working on a recording file one by one, it opens up tremendous possibilities. Most of all, it's much faster.]

The research team plans to make a pig sound analysis program a smartphone app so that it can be used to raise happier pigs on farms.

If enough data is collected, not only pigs but also other animal sounds can be interpreted, the research team added.
