Catholic representatives from around the world gathered at the Vatican to agree to expand the role of women within the church, but decided it was premature to allow women to have a female subtitle.

The Associated Press, Reuters and other foreign media reported that 368 delegates to the second session of the Synod's 16th General Assembly of the World Bishops' Conference wrapped up the meeting on the 26th local time and adopted the final report.

"There is no reason or obstacle to preventing women from taking leadership roles in the church," the final report said, but on the issue of the women's subtitle, it "remains open, and it continues to require discernment."

The Catholic Church does not allow women to officiate Mass or Eucharist, as well as priests who refer to bishops or priests, but does not allow lectures, baptisms, and nuptials.

But the reformists have argued that allowing women to have a subtitle would help solve the problem of Catholic priests and resolve longstanding grievances among women within the church.

Conservatives, on the other hand, strongly oppose allowing women to become priests on the grounds that it could ultimately pave the way for the appointment of women priests.

The synod will end on the 27th with the closing Mass hosted by Pope Francis at the Vatican's St. Peter's Basilica.
