Gizzard shads, called autumn delicacies, are in short supply.

The price nearly doubled as it was difficult to find gizzard shad even in seafood markets and marts.

The main reason is an increase in water temperature, and it is time to take countermeasures according to the changing environment.

Reporter Oh Dong-gun covered it.

The fish tank, which should be full of jumping gizzard shad, is cold.

[Choi Woo-chang / Fish Market Store owner: It's too hard to sell because the supply has decreased by two-thirds. It's too expensive. The price has more than doubled compared to last year.

This is because the catch of gizzard shad has decreased significantly this year, and the amount released on the auction market has decreased significantly.

The catch from January to August this year was 3,380 tons, down half from the same period last year.

Gizzard shad also disappeared in the mart.

Normally, this place should be full of gizzard shads at this time of year, but there is only one pack left like this.Consumers who were looking for gizzard shad as an autumn delicacy

gave up their purchase at a high price.

[Im Jiyoung / Gocheok-dong, Seoul: I used to eat gizzard shads a lot in fall, but I don't see them anymore. I don't think I can eat it because it's expensive.]

The average sea temperature in Korea in September was 27°C, which was 3.5°C higher than the average for the past 10 years.

The catch of gizzard shad, which mainly lives at 15℃ to 21℃, has decreased.

The supply has decreased due to the hot sea, which is the same for blue crabs
According to the
Fisheries Cooperative, the amount of crab consignment last month was 2,707 tons, down 47.5% from the same period last year.

[Kim Mi-soon / Fish market store owner: These days, the catch has decreased, so the price has gone up a lot.]

On the other hand, the supply of shrimp that grow well at high water temperatures has increased, and tropical fish species have been found in the South Sea, and our sea environment is changing rapidly.

As the temperature of our sea varies depending on the heat wave or abnormal climate, fish species and catches are also changing significantly. Measures to respond to this also seem urgent.
