Next year's World Environment Day event will be held on Jeju Island.

The Ministry of Environment and the U.N. Environment Program announced today that they have chosen Jeju Island as the venue for next year's World Environment Day celebrations.

It is the first time in 28 years that the World Environment Day celebration has been held in Korea since 1997.

World Environment Day is a day to commemorate the opening of the first international environmental conference, the United Nations Conference on Human Environment, in Stockholm, Sweden, on June 5, 1972.

Next year's World Environment Day event is expected to serve as an opportunity to inform the world of the importance of ending plastic pollution along with the 5th Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee for the "Legally Binding Convention on Ending Plastic Pollution" in Busan next month.

The Ministry of Environment said Jeju Island was selected as the host of World Environment Day by leading policy efforts to end plastic pollution by declaring the "2040 Zero Plastic Jeju Vision" in 2022 and introducing the nation's first disposable cup deposit system.
