The 2024 U.S. presidential election is just three days away.

U.S. presidential elections are held indirectly through state-by-state allotment of electors.

If more than 270 out of a total of 538 electors are secured, they will be elected president, which is a winner-take-all system (except Nebraska and Maine).

During the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Hillary Clinton received 65.84 million votes in the national vote, outpacing Trump by 2.86 million votes, but she lost to Trump (304) with only 227 electors.

This is why securing electors is more important than the total number of votes in the US presidential election.

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump are in a close race ahead of the presidential election.

Win or lose is likely to be determined by who wins the Rust Belt, including Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Sun Belt, including Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada.

With candidate approval ratings flailing at the end of the election, attention is being paid to what the results will be in these competing states.
