A senior EU official told reporters in Brussels, Belgium, that the leaders of member states plan to gather to discuss "Atlantic relations" at a dinner hosted by Hungarian Prime Minister Orban Viktor on the 7th.
The official said, "Anyone elected will focus on exchanging and agreeing on the common position of the EU," adding that he will focus on sending messages on the importance of EU-US relations and support for Ukraine.
However, as there are some differences between member states, it is not expected that it will be easy to coordinate opinions.
The official also said the leaders are expected to maintain their stance on Ukraine aid unchanged, but whether all 27 countries will is a matter of another level.
Indeed, in the second half of the year, pro-Russian Hungarian Prime Minister Orban, who heads the EU circuit, has publicly supported former U.S. President Donald Trump and opposed Ukraine aid.
For this reason, some predict that Prime Minister Orban, who has been at odds with the EU line, will try to use the event as a venue to show off his political capabilities both internally and externally.
As soon as Hungary became the EU's president in July, Prime Minister Orban visited Russia and China one after another, posing himself as a "peace mission," drawing criticism from other EU member states.
