In a statement on the evening of 5th local time, Netanyahu said he was dismissing Gallant and appointing Israeli Foreign Minister Katz to the post.
"In the early months of the war, trust existed between me and the defence minister, and the work was accomplished, but in the last few months this trust has been cracked," Netanyahu said.
Netanyahu disagreed with Gallant on the war and pointed out that Gallant used to make decisions and remarks against Cabinet decisions.
Galant said in May that he opposed Israel's post-war Gaza rule and repeatedly clashed with Netanyahu at a wartime Cabinet meeting over plans for the post-war Gaza Strip.
Galant, a former commander of the Israeli military's southern command, was appointed defense minister under Netanyahu's nomination.
