On the 9th local time, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz celebrated the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and said, "This is a lucky day that we Germans are still grateful to this day."
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner also said at an official event at the Berlin Wall Memorial that "without freedom, everything else becomes nothing," and that "freedom and democracy have never been taken for granted."
For the celebration, organizers created a temporary wall with 5,000 posters designed by children and adults under the theme "We support freedom."The poster wall, which stretched 4km along the old wall of downtown Berlin
, attracted large crowds, including tourists, foreign media said.
In the evening, an outdoor concert was held in front of the old site of the Berlin Wall, where 700 professional musicians and amateurs performed a variety of performances.
Built by the former Soviet Union in 1961, the Berlin Wall stood as a symbol of the U.S.-Soviet Cold War for 28 years before it was toppled by Berliners on November 9, 1989.
The fall of the Berlin Wall 35 years ago led to the reunification of East and West Germany on October 3 of the following year.
Since then, most sections of the Berlin Wall have been demolished, and only a few remain historical heritage and tourist attractions.
