Maori people in New Zealand have started a protest against the government's push for new legislation.

According to Reuters, the Maori people oppose the government-pushed legislation, saying it undermines the rights of New Zealand's indigenous Maori people.

The government-initiated bill aims to reinterpret the Waitangyi Treaty, an agreement signed in 1840 between the Maori chiefs and the British royal family.

The Maori people account for about 20% of New Zealand's total population of 5.3 million, and protesters will start a nine-day march from the North Island on the 10th local time and arrive in New Zealand's parliament on the 19th.

The Waitangi Treaty is a historical document signed between hundreds of Maori chiefs and the British royal family, stipulating how the two parties will govern each other.

The treaty plays an important role in New Zealand's laws and policies, and is also the basis for Maori's claim of sovereignty.
