UNIFIL says a UNIFIL patrol car passing near Kalawiye in southern Lebanon found an ammunition depot on the side of the road, alerted the Lebanese army to a stop and fired as crews got off and cleared debris on the road.
Three gunmen fired about 30 shots at them, resulting in no UNIFIL casualties.
UNIFIL said it was unclear whether the discovery of the armory was directly linked to the attack, and that it had launched an investigation and called on Lebanese authorities to punish the perpetrators.
UNIFIL noted that peacekeepers should never be targeted and that shooting at them is a blatant violation of international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
