A cable car, a specialty of San Francisco, is on the verge of being shut down due to financial difficulties, CNN reported.

The San Francisco Transportation Authority (SFMTA) said it expects a $300 million deficit in fiscal 2026 and is considering cost-cutting measures, including suspending cable car operations.

Abolishing the three cable car lines would save $33 million a year, the agency expects.

Tourists say they cannot imagine San Francisco without cable cars, CNN said.
