◆ Announcer Lee Hyun-woong (hereinafter referred to as Lee Hyun-woong): It's proprietary patent time with the Korean Intellectual Property Office. Many start-ups have started their own businesses with brilliant ideas and technologies, but many start-ups disappear within a few years because they cannot use them effectively. In order to prevent such a sad situation, there is a unique policy that experts guide carefully from securing patents to attracting investment. Let's take a closer look at what kind of policy it is. We invited Lee Soo-young, a professional consultant at the Chungbuk Intellectual Property Center, and Choi Ah-young, a professional consultant at the Gwangju Intellectual Property Center. Please introduce yourself first.
◇ Lee Soo-young Professional Consultant at Chungbuk Intellectual Property Center (hereinafter referred to as Lee Soo-young): Hello, I am Lee Soo-young professional consultant who supports IP technology and management consulting for start-up companies at Chungbuk Intellectual Property Center.
◈ Gwangju Intellectual Property Center Choi Ah-young Professional Consultant (hereinafter Choi Ah-young): Hello, I'm Choi Ah-young, a professional consultant in charge of IP Narae business at Gwangju Intellectual Property Center.
◆ Lee Hyun-woong: The Intellectual Property Center is a place where small and medium-sized enterprises support when they commercialize intellectual property. Among them, two people who consult directly came. Can you give me a real example of how the business works?
◈Choi Ah-young: The IP Narae program will hold eight consulting sessions involving local consultants and intellectual property partners during the 100-day project. It is pointed out that the most positive evaluation of beneficiary companies through IP Narae projects is that they can hold meetings with experts face-to-face. In addition, we are helping to find solutions to various problems and difficulties faced by start-up companies. In fact, among the support companies I consulted this year, there was a second-year company that developed AI service solutions that were having difficulty securing commercialization funds. From writing IR data to consulting on IR presentations to finding investment destinations, it was selected as an R&D support project along with the initial investment attraction performance of 700 million won this year, securing about 1 billion won in commercialization funds.
◆ Lee Hyun-woong: Is there another case?
◇Lee Soo-young: Last year, we supported the men's absorption pad technology, a new business item for the company that is the number one wet tissue seller in Southeast Asian countries. Consulting was conducted to investigate and analyze competitors' patents and products on new items and to build a patent portfolio by expanding materials, ingredients, structures, forms, and uses for technologies owned by companies. In addition, the case of supporting the introduction of the job invention compensation system and the corporate-affiliated research institute for R&D to be certified to lay the foundation for intellectual property management is memorable.
◆ Lee Hyun-woong: How many companies have benefited from this project so far?
◈ Choi Ah-young: The IP Narae program has been supported by more than 4,600 companies since 2017 and supports an average of around 6 to 700 companies every year. In the case of economic performance of IP support companies, sales and employment increased by 14% and 20% based on support companies last year. In addition, it has consistently achieved good results over the past three years, attracting an average of 170 billion won in linkage support and financing and investment from other institutions every year. The pride of IP programs is that the survival rate of supporting companies is very high. The survival rate in the third year after the project support is 95%, which is very high compared to the three-year survival rate of 46.3% and the five-year survival rate of Korean companies at 34.3%.
◆Lee Hyun-woong: What did you feel or remember while working on this project so far?
◇Lee Soo-young: This is my 10th year as an intellectual property center consultant. Looking back on 10 years, I think it was a series of meetings. At first, it was most rewarding to watch companies that were not familiar with intellectual property continue to secure intellectual property rights after support and establish intellectual property in management, and commercialize and grow based on technology secured through IP Narae programs.
◈Choi Ah-young: I heard that among the companies that received support for the IP Narae program at the Gwangju Intellectual Property Center, it was listed on the KOSDAQ for 8 years after its start-up and 5 years after receiving the IP Narae program. I feel proud when the consultant does his best to respond to various needs in consulting for start-up companies in the consulting field and those efforts return to the company's performance.
◆ Announcer Lee Hyun-woong (hereinafter referred to as Lee Hyun-woong): It seems to be a necessary business for early start-up companies that lack information. Please introduce whether you are eligible for application and where and how to apply.
◇Lee Soo-young: The IP Narae business targets small and medium-sized enterprises within 7 years of its founding, and start-ups in new industries can receive up to 10 years of support. The IP Narae project recruits support companies twice a year in February and May, and you can apply for the project online by visiting the local intellectual property center business management system website. If you contact the local intellectual property center nearby, we will guide you to customized support for businesses that meet the needs of companies.
◆Lee Hyun-woong: Please say your last words.
◈Choi Ah-young: The IP Narae program is not just a patent support business, but it is designed to strengthen the intellectual property base and capabilities to increase competitiveness in the market and grow into a sustainable company by securing strong patents based on the technology owned by start-up companies. If you want to secure intellectual property rights, but you don't have professional manpower, and you're struggling with lack of funds, please get help from your local intellectual property center!
◆ Lee Hyun-woong: Until now, I was Lee Soo-young professional consultant at Chungbuk Intellectual Property Center and Choi Ah-young professional consultant at Gwangju Intellectual Property Center.
