The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's regional investigation team said it arrested 12 people, including nine Russian men in their 40s, who were in charge of the romance scam international group's domestic affairs, and handed them over to the prosecution.
A and others are accused of extorting 1.4 billion won 68 times from 14 Korean victims they met on social media pretending to be U.S. soldiers or international students for 10 months from January.
Mr. A was in charge of managing criminal proceeds in Korea, other members worked as withdrawals, and it was found that the group who sent messages to the victims was overseas.
They were found to have made friends with the victims by using fake photos and identities on social media, and then intercepted the money and remitted it abroad in the name of "I sent my luggage, but I need customs clearance fees."
