Citing the Sudanese Sovereign Council, foreign media including AFP and Reuters reported that special envoy Tom Periello discussed humanitarian aid and ways to end the war with General Burhan in the eastern port city of Port Sudan.
The Sudanese Sovereign Council said the two sides had long, comprehensive and frank talks, while the State Department also said Periello had frank talks with the Sudanese side.
This is the first time a senior U.S. official has visited Sudan since a civil war broke out between Sudanese government forces and the paramilitary rapid support force "RSF" in April last year and the U.S. embassy withdrew.
On the same day, the Security Council's adoption of a resolution calling for a ceasefire on both parties to the Sudan conflict was rejected by Russia, a permanent member of the UN headquarters in New York.
In Sudan, which has been experiencing civil war and political instability since independence in 1956, armed conflict between government forces and RSF has intensified since April last year, and more than 24,000 people have been killed across the country so far.
