"Do I have to kill everyone because of 1 Hezbollah? Aren't we even humans?"

Local residents who were affected by Israel's airstrike on the center of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, are angry, the BBC said.

Israeli forces attacked an eight-story residential building in the Basta region of central Beirut at around 4 a.m., and Lebanon's health ministry said at least 20 people were killed and 66 injured in the raid.

The Israeli military is said to have carried out the raid to kill the highest-ranking official of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

However, Amin Sherry, a Lebanese congressman from Hezbollah, claimed there was no Hezbollah leader in the building.

Lebanon's state-run NNA news agency reported that Israel also used the so-called "bunkerbuster" used to kill Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah and others in the past.

The Israeli military reportedly used a 2,000-pound (907 kg) BLU-109 during the assassination of Nasrallah in September, which can also penetrate a concrete wall about 2 meters thick.

Unannounced airstrikes caused huge explosions, leaving local residents in shock and fear.

Ali Asar, 55, a resident who lives nearby, told the BBC, "All the windows and glass fell over my wife and children," adding, "It was a really horrible explosion. The house turned into a battlefield."

"Even if there is one (Hezbollah) hiding here, should we break down the building where people are sleeping?" he said, strongly criticizing the airstrike, adding, "Should we kill everyone for one person, or are we humans?"

"We saw two bodies on the ground," Samir, 60, who lives opposite the targeted building, told AFP. "The children started crying, their mothers cried louder."

In addition to the Basta region, Israeli forces also launched airstrikes in Dahiye, southern Beirut, which is said to be home to Hezbollah.

In addition, attacks continue in southern Lebanon, where Israel is engaged in a ground war, the BBC said.

The eastern Lebanese city of Balbeck was also hit by airstrikes, killing at least 15 people, including four children, the country's health ministry said.

Israel and Hezbollah have been fighting near the border since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October last year.

It comes after Hezbollah attacked Israel in the name of supporting Palestinian militant Hamas.

Clashes between the two sides, which led to low intensity, intensified in September after Israel simultaneously detonated Hezbollah radio callers and killed Nasrallah.

Lebanon's health ministry says at least 3,670 people have been killed and at least 15,400 injured in armed clashes between Israel and Hezbollah since the Gaza war.
