There is a lot of snow all over the country. Let's take a look at how long it will last with an expert. I will join the anti-Sung YTN Disaster Advisory Committee. It's actually the first snow in Seoul, but a lot of snow has accumulated. A lot of snow has fallen all over the country since last night, how much did it fall?

[Planar]
First of all, the place that fell the most was Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi-do, where it fell 21.9cm. Then, in the Seoul area, Seongbuk-gu fell 20.6cm, and the official representative area observed by the Seoul Meteorological Administration fell 16.5cm. Then, Pyeongchang fell 12.7cm and Hongcheon fell 18cm. Next, it's snowing a lot in Jinan and Muju, Jeollabuk-do. This area also currently has 9.8cm of snow.

[Anchor]
It means more people are coming.

[Planar]
That's right. Until this Friday, there will be a lot of snow in the country. Especially today and tomorrow, the snow is mainly concentrated in the central region. At the same time, it will be mixed with snow and rain during the day, but it is expected to accumulate from tonight to early morning tomorrow. And on Friday, a lot of snow is expected mainly in Jeollanam-do and Jeju. And after a lull on Saturday and Sunday, it is expected to snow again nationwide next Monday.

First of all, the expected amount is mainly expected to snow in the central part, but it is expected to be up to 30cm in the mountainous area of central Gangwon. It is expected to be up to 20cm in southern Gyeonggi Province, followed by Seoul, northern North Chungcheong Province, and northern North Gyeongsang Province.

[Anchor]
Do you think it's just snow? Or can it be mixed with rain?

[Planar]
First of all, in Seoul, the daytime temperature is currently below zero, but the daytime temperature goes up on video. If that happens, the snow will mix. Even if it rains in Seoul or southern Gyeonggi Province, the rain is expected to prevail. However, as night falls, the temperature drops again from night, so it changes to snow again then. Snow is likely to be much more dominant between tonight and tomorrow as the chill keeps coming down.

I heard that this snow is especially humid. There are many dangerous parts of wet snow because of its weight?

[Planar]
That's right. The conditions for wet snow are between -0 and -10 degrees, and the ground temperature. The snow that falls at this time is called wet snow and heavy snow. Because it contains a lot of water vapor. In particular, in this case, the wind is almost coming in the west wind. As a result, the snow cloud coming from the West Sea is turning into a wet theory as it receives a lot of water vapor. In the case of wet snow, it's very dangerous because it's very heavy.

Usually 10m wide and 10m high, for example, in Seoul, it fell to 20cm, right? It weighs about 2.4 tons. For example, in the case of a small temporary building, if the snow accumulates 20cm, 2.4 tons on the temporary building is very dangerous. As a result, there is a high possibility that temporary buildings or greenhouses will collapse. That's why it's better to get rid of snow quickly in such places.

[Anchor]
I think the snow needs to melt quickly. What's the temperature like? Will it go up a lot?

[Planar]
It doesn't go up that much. Since the cold continues to descend south in earnest, the daytime temperature is around 4 degrees Celsius in Seoul. On weekends, Saturday and Sunday, the temperature rises slightly. That's pretty much the case until Friday. And the morning temperature remains below zero. It seems that strong winds will continue to blow during the day. As a result, it is expected that the temperature we actually feel will be below zero even during the day as the temperature decreases.

During the day, in the case of main roads, Seoul, most of them are melted or mixed with water. It doesn't matter if the main road with snow removal is good in the daytime, such as Seoul, but in Seoul, in the case of back roads and highland areas, it freezes with snow falling. We also have more snow tonight. First of all, Seoul, Chungcheong, and the central part of the country to Gangwon-do. In this case, we expect it to be quite dangerous as the snow freezes.

[Anchor]
We're showing you the road conditions in real time even on CCTV screens. As you can see, in the case of large roads, most of the snow is melted because the snow removal work has been carried out once. You can see the snow still piled up white on the sidewalk and on the side of the road. If you're on your way to work, you should refer to the screen and leave early. You said that the wind is strong again, but there are places where strong wind warnings and warnings have been issued.

[Planar]
That's right. Yesterday, strong winds actually blew as the electric wires passed through, so almost all regions across the country were issued a strong wind warning. Today, the strong high pressure coming in from the west to what we call the barometric hardness. Because of this wind, the number of strong wind warning zones has decreased compared to yesterday. Currently, strong wind warnings are issued mainly in coastal and mountainous areas. In the case of mountains, the instantaneous jet wind speed is expected to be about 25 meters per second, up to 20 meters in the case of the coast, and up to 15 meters in the inland direction, but yesterday, there was a lot of destruction of facilities.

It was strong yesterday and today. Yesterday, in the case of mountainous areas in Gangwon-do, it blew up to 39m, and usually over 20m in flat areas. As a result, there have been many accidents such as the flying of the signboards or the breaking of the screen, and even if it is slightly weaker than yesterday, it is a very strong wind. First of all, in the case of inland, if the maximum instantaneous wind speed is more than 15m, the standing board can fly. In the case of coastal or mountainous areas, 20-25m is almost difficult for people to walk without bending, or because it is a wind speed that can fly such as a roof, so it is necessary to repair facilities caused by wind.

Yesterday, hail fell in the mountainous areas of Gangwon-do. Should this be due to the atmospheric instability?

[Planar]
It's quite unusual because hail in Korea occurs a lot in May or October. So it happens when the cold comes down from the upper floor, but it doesn't happen in the middle of summer. However, it is very rare for hail to fall at the end of November. Hail is coming down as the front passed through yesterday, and we usually have very high-rise, low-rise, and middle-class people. Hail is usually made when a chill enters the middle class.

When the atmosphere becomes unstable as the cold enters, thunder and lightning usually accompanied yesterday, for example, hail with strong continental clouds is created. So, there was a hail in the mountains of Gangwon-do yesterday, and the atmosphere is quite unstable. In today's case, the atmosphere is unstable, so the Korea Meteorological Administration expects thunder and lightning to occur on the west coast.

Last winter, there was a case where people were isolated because there was a lot of snow in the mountainous areas of Gangwon-do in a short period of time. Will it snow strongly and intensively in some areas this winter?

[Planar]
I think it's possible enough. First of all, strong snow is entering Gangwon-do today, but observations are not coming out well toward the mountains, so it has not been confirmed that it has fallen to some extent yet. Mountain falls more because it has a topographical effect as we talk about it as it enters. So, in this case, Gangwon Mountain is expected to have a lot of snow. Usually, a lot of snow falls in the mountains of Gangwon-do when the east wind enters.

So, when the northeast wind comes in, or when the southeastern wind blows through the south, a lot of snow falls toward the mountain, and in February this year, 50 to 60 centimeters of snow fell, and many villages are isolated. However, as a whole this winter, the Korea Meteorological Administration expected that it would be warm in February or similar to the average year, but this expectation is to average the whole month or three months. It's a little unusual this time as the chill comes down partially. The west wind came into Gangwon-do, but in Gangwon-do, there is a high possibility of a lot of snow this year when the east wind enters.

What should I prepare if it snows a lot?

[Planar]
The most important thing is to remove snow in front of your house or store as soon as possible. Then, in the case of vehicles, it would be good to slow down quite a bit, for example, change them to snow tires, or something like that. And then maybe it's because I'm old, but when it snows, a lot of falls occur. In particular, in the case of now, the side road will freeze tonight when it snows. For the elderly, it would be better not to go out as much as possible, and if you have to go out, I think it would be better to prepare for this, such as holding a cane.

[Anchor]
You mentioned it briefly ahead of the midwinter weather forecast, and there was a forecast that December would be very cold, but recently, I changed the forecast like this, saying that it would be a warmer winter than expected. Why did I do that?

[Planar]
First of all, the Korea Meteorological Administration's change from last month and this month's three-month forecast was in December. Last month, I expected December to be colder than usual. Then I expected it to be similar to the average year this month. So, especially last month, I expected that February would be warmer than usual.

I think so. Don't you usually make predictions with lead time? Even when we usually look at the weather, if we listen to the forecast five days in advance, it will rain in Seoul. I saw it three days ago, so it's not. They say it's only cloudy. I went a day ago, so no, it's sunny. Things that change can be predicted more accurately as you get closer. So predictions can change.

So, I think there are not much differences between the various conditions that the Korea Meteorological Administration predicts in winter, such as the Arctic sea ice, the snow cover on the Tibetan side, and the western wind in the stratosphere, but there are some things that change slightly. So last month, it will be colder than usual in December due to these things. But I predicted that it will be similar to the average year this month. But there's a clue. I think it will fluctuate considerably. This is a case like this.

A cold wave came down at the end of November. It's coming down for a long time. What this is is that even if the temperature rises slightly on weekends, of course, the lowest temperature is lower than usual. Even so, the cold period will remain for about 10 days until next Thursday. So, I think this winter will be a repetitive form of this cold period and a warm period that is slightly longer than that. So it's just similar to the average year because it's on average, but it's not cold, it's not this. Being cold can be very cold.

[Anchor]
I think many people are worried because of the heavy snow from the first snow. What do you think? Can we expect a lot of snow this winter?

[Planar]
The Korea Meteorological Administration expected November and January to be slightly less than usual. But the problem is that I hardly expected today's snow to fall like this. It's hard to predict this much. That's why it's quite difficult. Such forecasts are difficult, but the Korea Meteorological Administration first predicted that December and January will be slightly less than usual, and February will be more. But from our perspective, wouldn't it be similar to the average year? In particular, I expect that there will be more topographical Gangseo, East Coast, West Coast, and Jeju than usual.

[Anchor]
Anyway, cold weather and snow are expected to go back and forth throughout this week. You should be careful. We took a closer look at the snow forecast situation with the anti-Sung YTN Disaster Advisory Committee. Thank you.
