The Associated Press reported that Steele won 49.9% of the vote in California's 45th Congressional District and was defeated by Democratic candidate Derek Tran, who received 50.1% of the vote.
Steele seemed to win by continuing his dominance in the middle of the vote count, but after being reversed in the second half, he eventually lost by more than 600 votes.
California's 45th District is the most contested area in the election, and the results of the vote were announced 22 days after the election on the 6th.
