While the government is pushing for a labor-management agreement on extending the retirement age by early next year, a survey showed that if the retirement age is extended to 65, the corporate burden will exceed 30 trillion won per year.

We are interested in whether a social consensus can be reached amid concerns that the retirement age issue may trigger generational conflicts beyond labor-management conflicts.

Reporter Hwang Hye-kyung reports.

I asked citizens about their thoughts on extending the retirement age.

[Kim Juyeon / Bongcheon-dong, Seoul: They've been working for many decades, so I thought it's right for them to be treated a little more than young people who want to get a job. Even though I'm a young man...]

[Yang Jae-soo / Sangam-dong, Seoul: Private companies need to make profits, but if they don't have profits, they can't have that many people, right?]

[Lee Chae-hyun / Eungam-dong, Seoul: The government's position to pay the national pension late even though it understands (the push to extend the retirement age)]. There are conflicting parts, so I think it's necessary to agree on each other's opinions.

In the era of 10 million elderly population, discussions are gaining momentum as the government actively promotes the extension of the retirement age.

The main point is to extend the current retirement age of 60 to 65, and Lee Jung-geun, who took office as the president of the Korea Senior Citizens Association earlier, drew attention by arguing that the standard for the elderly should be increased to 75.

[Lee Jung-geun / President of the Korea Senior Citizens' Association (last October): If the government introduces a system such as extending the retirement age, we would like to extend the production period for 10 years, which receives 40% of the peak retirement age in the first year of the retirement age extension and 20% even at the age of 75, 10 years later.]

But companies are reluctant.

First of all, it is argued that the burden of labor costs is high, personnel stagnation within the organization is intensified, and it can negatively affect new youth recruitment.

In fact, according to a survey commissioned by the Korea Business Association, if the retirement age is extended to 65, the corporate burden will reach 30.2 trillion won a year.

[Park Yong-min, head of the Economic Survey Team of the Korean Business Association: There may be various factors depending on the size of each company or the characteristics of the industry or the work of the worker, but it would be quite burdensome to make sure that the retirement age is fixed at 65 because it does not take into account the prepared conditions of those companies]

In order to ease the burden on companies while increasing the retirement age, it is necessary to touch the annual supply system or salary system, which determines the wage level according to the number of years of service, which is not easy for the union to accept.

The government has been holding talks between labor, management and government for half a year amid sharp interests, but it is not easy to find a point of contact.

However, as everyone agrees on the need to extend the retirement age, attention is being paid to whether an agreement can be reached ahead of the entry into a super-aged society next year.
